Flat-topped aster occurs in a variety of moist habitats from wet meadows, marshes, and wet prairies to moist openings in coniferous woodlands and at the edges of swamps. It grows on sandy or silty loam to sedge peat. Will do well on sunny, moist sites with tall sedges and forbs.
